Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium at Cove Infant School

Cove Infant School is an inclusive school and we work hard to support all children no matter their background. We know that some children are however more vulnerable than others or some may need greater support in order to help them be successful in school.

What is Pupil Premium?

The Government gives additional money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best. This funding is called ‘Pupil Premium’.

If you currently receive any of the following benefits your child might be eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on
  • Universal Credit, provided you have an annual net earned income not exceeding £7,400 (£616.67 per month)

Also, children who are looked after in care, or have been adopted from care are awarded Pupil Premium.  There is a smaller amount of funding for children of service families too.

If you think you might fall into one of the categories above, then please speak to the office.  All information is treated as highly confidential.

Why do we need Pupil Premium?

The government provides the extra funding because research shows that the educational performance of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds is lower than their peers. The barriers and challenges these pupils face are complex and varied – there is no single difficulty faced by all. It can have a big influence on pupils’ life chances - but schools can make a difference to this. By supporting disadvantaged pupils to achieve their full potential, schools can help break the link between disadvantage and performance.

Schools can choose how to spend the Pupil Premium funding, allowing to really benefit those children it is aimed for.

What is our strategy at Cove Infants?

We strongly believe that all our pupils need to feel safe and happy before they can learn.  The important basic building blocks like attendance, behaviour, being well fed and having positive self-esteem are all key to ensuring that children can focus on their learning and reach our high aspirations, which we have for all our pupils.

As well as receiving the school’s high quality teaching and learning within the classroom, there is also the opportunity to have additional one to one and small group teaching based on personalised and individual targets, which further helps the children to make the very best progress they can. Support may be given to buy uniform, provide a hearty breakfast, or give some emotional literacy support.  We tailor our provision to meet individual needs.
