Stop that Mess!

 

Last half term our project was 'Stop That Mess!' and we read the story 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley'.

We wrote our own version and created new characters for the story.  We also used our imaginations to turn Stanley in to something new for the ending. 

 

Thank you for joining us for our outcome at school and working with your child to make their idea come to life using a plastic bag!  We all had great fun and we hope you did too!

 

In this project, we also learnt about materials and their properties and which materials are allowed to be recycled.

What's Happening This Half Term? 

 

It's hard to believe we are quickly approaching the end of the Spring Term! 

 

This half term our topic is "Putting Farnborough on the Map" - More information about this topic can be found on our Year 1 website page.

 

We have continued to worked hard to develop our blending and segmenting skills with our digraphs and trigraphs. We have also learned to chunk up longer words to make them easier to decipher. We have also been learning about split vowel digraphs where the vowels are split with the 'e' at the end of the word.  For example: cake, snake, ripe, kite, cone, home, theme, concrete, flute, cube.

In writing we have been looking at maps and writing directions using words such as 'first', 'then', 'now', 'next', 'after that'. 

We also looked at photos of Cove Infant School from when it opened in 1954 and compared them to how the school looks today.  We then wrote about the differences we saw.  In this project, we will also be writing a visitor guide to inform people about Farnborough.  In this visitor guide, we will write about Cove Brook, Farnborough Airport and Samuel Cody amongst other things Farnborough has to offer!  

 

 

In Maths we are learning about multiplication and division.  We have been looking at how we can group objects into equal amounts and how we can count the amount of rows in an array.  We have also been learning how to share amounts equally.

At home, you could count in 2's, 5's and 10's with your child to 100, forwards and backwards so they become secure with this.

 

 

In our projects we have also been doing PSHE, Science, Art, D.T, History and P.E!

Reading 

 

Each Friday your child will have their phonics book assigned to their Collins e-library account. This can be accessed via the internet or by the Collins E-Library app. Previous books will remain on your child's account so they can re-visit them. 

Your child's log in details were sent home but if you have misplaced these then please catch Miss Turner or Mrs Treanor so another copy can be sent home. 

 

We are hoping to fundraise for more books so that a copy of the book can be sent home with your child soon!

Phonics Screening Check

 

In June, all Year 1 children will participate in the phonic screening check. 

 

Your child will work with an adult who is familiar to them and will be asked to read 40 words. These words are all phonetically decodable and are a mixture of real and 'alien' (nonsense) words. If it is an alien word, it will have a picture of an alien next to it so the children will know it might sound funny when they read it. 

 

The words will contain a mixture of sounds. There will be a few 3 letter words, some words with digraphs and trigraphs, some words with split vowel digraphs, and some words with adjacent consonants. All the sounds will be taught in school but it would be helpful if you could work on phonics with your child at home. Please see the phonics page for guidance about how you can support phonics at home. 

 

Some examples of real words that have been used in the past: 

chart, fresh, zoom, strike, shed, label, blossom, saucers 

 

Some examples of alien words that have been used in the past:

jair, blies, whape, dack, nurt, heent, sprop

Fire, Fire!

 

Our Project in Spring 1 was the...

 

Great Fire of London!

 

We were Historians and we learnt about the Great Fire of London. 

 

We looked at what London was like in 1666 and learnt why the fire spread so quickly. 

 

We looked closely at the features of the houses at the time of the Great Fire of London and we drew our own houses showing what we have learnt with different materials such as pencil, charcoal and chalk.

We learnt about Samuel Pepys and why he is a significant Historical Figure and wrote our own diary account as Samuel Pepys.

 

We also ordered the sequence of events during the Great Fire of London on a timeline to develop our understanding of chronology and we learnt a Fire dance in P.E.

 

We really enjoyed this topic and we can't wait to learn about more topics!

Gruffalo Song

In Music we have been learning to use our body to make sounds. We used a few of theses sounds to accompany our singing in our Gruffalo Song.
