Miss Maries needs help from the Year 2 children! She is finding that she is always tired, get out of breath easily and her skin doesn’t feel very nice but she doesn’t know why! The children will work to find out about essential foods that are needed to maintain a healthy diet and creating fitness routines, the children are able to give their teachers some good advice. Deciding this would benefit everyone, they create an obstacle course, make healthy snack boxes and ensure everyone is aware that hygiene is important.
In Science, the children will explore the 5 food groups and identifying foods which comprise each group. They will also discuss the contribution of each group to a healthy diet.
They will learn about people’s needs for a special diet whether because of personal choice, medical needs or on religious grounds, and see how foods can be substituted to create a balanced diet. The children will investigate the ‘Eat Well Plate’ and discuss the impact on the body of eating an unbalanced diet on ‘alertness’, weight and sense of well-being. They will find out where food comes from and learn which foods come from animals and which foods come from plants.
In Design and Technology, the children will discuss why a design criteria is needed to make a product. They will be able to explain the purpose, function and appeal in relation to a healthy snack box and use their knowledge from the project to make informed choices on what to put in their snack box in order for it to be a balanced meal.
