Cove Infant School

Growing and Achieving together

Discover New Zealand

The children were so excited when they arrived at school!  They were taken into the school hall, where they checked in their luggage and got their passports and boarding passes.  The staff were dressed as air stewards and greeted them into the classroom which had been turned into an aeroplane.

The children chose their seats, secured their seatbelts and relaxed for the duration of the flight.  They watched a safety briefing and were even served an inflight snack from the trolley!

Cove Airlines took flight and headed for the beautiful North Island of New Zealand. The passengers became aware of the continents they passed over on route to their final destination.

We started by looking at New Zealand and learnt that it is in the Southern hemisphere and it is surrounded by the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

We used atlases to locate New Zealand and saw it is separated into two parts (the North Island and the South Island).  The children also learnt that the islands are separated by a Cook Strait.

The children are going to explore the island and admire the beautiful landscapes of Mount Ruapehu, Rotorua and Lake Taupo. They will discover an active volcano and bubbling mud springs. These tourist spots are described in detail and persuasive guides are created to provide visitors to the area with a whole host of information.

The Maori people settled in New Zealand and used the native ferns to inspire a symbol of strength. The children will use pencils and oil pastels to create their own Koru designs.  Keep a look out on here for our artwork once it is completed!
