The Year Two Teachers cannot agree on the most important animal. Miss Cotterell, Mrs Barker, Miss Turner, Mrs Gratton and Mrs Packman are having a debate to see which animal is the most important out of a Sloth, a Flamingo, a Yellow throated frog, an Egyptian tortoise and a Scissortail fish. The children will investigate the 5 animal groups and classify a range of pets and wild animals. They will explore habitats that animals live in and will develop an understanding about how food chains work. A non-chronological report will be created to explain the appearance and diet of an animal. Animal patterns will be examined and a range of media will be used to create these. The Year 1 children will be invited to settle the debate and after listening to the animal information will be asked to vote for their favourite.
The children will also have a school trip to Marwell Zoo to see some animals up close!
The children will become scientists and they will identify the key features of the five animal groups and use this knowledge to sort and classify a range of common, exotic and pet animals into the correct animal groups, noting the key features for each group. They will also find out what it means to be a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. They will then use this knowledge to classify animals on a Venn diagram according to their food types.
