Computing
As ICT is continually developing and new technologies emerging, we as a school strive to give all children the skills to prepare them for their future. ICT is an essential part of everyday life and will continue to evolve in as yet unforeseen ways, so our children will need the confidence and ability to move with changes as they arrive. We envisage an environment where technology is an integral part of school life and is used as naturally across the curriculum as any other classroom resource. We believe that the use of technology encourages children and adults to become active and independent learners, who collaborate, plan and communicate more effectively with each other and the wider local, national and global communities, of which we are a part.
Each class has an interactive board which teachers use to engage children and enhance teaching.
Teachers are aware of the power of technology but also ensure that it is used as a supporting tool. It does not replace the skills of reading a book or writing.
Computing is taught discretely as well as being embedded within our exciting curriculum. Computing plays an important part in different projects across the year groups.
Year R
- Penguin pictures are drawn using different drawing tools and by changing colours.
- Google Earth is explored as the children travel the world.
- Symmetrical patterns are made during the festival of Diwali as the children learn about Rangoli Patterns.
- Children work collaboratively to create their own story by taking photos and recording their voice.
- Children take photos of their own child initiated learning to document their work.
Coding
The children learn:
- How to give instructions.
- How to turn the Beebot on and off.
- How to program a simple instruction to make a Beebot move.
- That they have to program the Beebot in a certain order.
E-Safety
The Year R children are taught the importance of internet safety and are taught to tell an adult if a message appears on their screen
YEAR 1
IT
- Researching information about the Great Fire of London.
- Drawing pictures of themselves using a variety of creative tools.
- Word processing to create a poster and a leaflet about recycling, learning to change the font, size and colour of their text.
- Saving and printing their work
Coding
- Understand that a set of programming instructions is called an algorithm.
- Plan a series of instructions using arrow cards.
- Program the algorithm into the Beebot to make it move.
- Begin to make corrections when there are errors in an algorithm and start to understand that this is called debugging.
E-Safety
- The children are constantly reminded about internet safety.
- They understand the importance of keeping their personal information secret when using the internet.
- They understand about talking to strangers over the internet.
- They understand that if they see something they don’t like or receive a message they must inform an adult.
YEAR 2
IT
- Researching information about animals and the Titanic.
- Word processing to create a leaflet about animals, changing the font, size and colour of their text. Typing up the instructions to their multi-skill game in order to create a book of games for Year R.
- Confidently save, print and open their work.
Coding
- Able to plan, program and execute an algorithm.
- Able to debug a set of instructions, explaining where the error occurred and correcting the algorithm.
- Creating Morse Code on board the Titanic.
